New Adaptation of Jane Austen Classic ‘Sense and Sensibility’
While not strictly ‘book’ news, I do think that most readers enjoy an adaptation of their favourite books. I was so excited to hear about this one, I have always adored the 1995 Oscar-winning adaptation from Ang Lee that starred Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Watching the trailer for this new version has me very excited to see it this October.
While I adore the stories, I have always found it hard to get into classic novels. I just don’t find it as immersive as newer books, it might be the language isn’t as familiar to me and so it takes longer for the meaning to sink in. The audio books are great, if you’ve ever wanted to read Jane Austen but struggled with the language, the audio books are free on Spotify.

From watching the trailer it looks like they’ve really tried to recreate the story with historical accuracy. I like the earthy tones of the film and costuming, I think this one might be a bit more true to the source material than the recent adaptation of Persuasion. Which, let me say first, I really enjoyed, but I can see why there was some backlash around this interpretation. Dakota Johnson frequently broke the fourth wall to deliver sarcastic winks and cynical asides to the camera. The script traded quiet period drama yearning for modern "relatable" humor (such as Anne chugging wine, crying in a bathtub, and casually using contemporary slang). My favourite version of Persuasion came out in 2007, I think Sally Hawkins & Rupert Penry-Jones had perfect chemistry for the lead roles. Anyway, I digress.
The cast includes Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret Dashwood, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars and Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings.
